Campground Desciption and details: A truly Alaskan experience. Rustic charm, old-time atmosphere. Listed on National Historic Register. Economical rooms, RV parking and dining. Northern lights and Malemute Saloon shows! Five miles from Fairbanks. Evening transportation from major hotels and RV parks provided. Open mid-May to mid-September. Ester Gold Camp celebrates its 41st Anniversary as a major Fairbanks visitor attraction. Ester Gold Camp is situated on the Ester Creek Shelf near Cripple Creek - one of the richest gold creeks in the world. Ester Gold Camp dates back to 1900 when the camp was called Ester City and served several mining claims. By 1907, Ester City had three hotels, five saloons and five other businesses as well as homes. Eventually, the pick and pan gave way to partnerships with steam hoists; those gave way to the hydraulic cannon and the gold dredge. In 1936, the Fairbanks Exploration Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Smelting, Refining and Mining Company, converted the historic buildings of Ester into a logistical base for a large mechanized mining operation. In 1958 the F.E. Company sold the camp to a group of investors and since then it has operated as a visitor attraction. Because of the integrity, location, design, and importance of the buildings and the site of the camp, Ester Gold Camp is officially listed on the National Register ofHistoric Places. Ester Gold Camp's celebration includes the announcement of the "Supplier of the Year" award for 1997 from Contiki Holiday, the world's biggest travel company for 18-35 year olds. Special guest attractions at Ester Gold Camp include the Ester Gold Camp Dining Hall Buffet Dinner, featuring crab, halibut, reindeer stew, country chicken, home made biscuits and blueberry jam with dinner served nightly 5 - 9 pm, May 23rd thru September 1st, 2003; the world-famous Malemute Saloon Show, "Service With a Smile," featuring a professional cast performing songs, hilarious sketches and the poetry of Robert Service - with showtime nightly at 9:00pm. Additional shows are offered at 7pm in July on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The spectacular Northern Lights Photosymphony, "The Crown of Light," is performed nightly at 6:45 and 7:45pm. Additional shows are offered at 6pm in July on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Firehouse Theatre. Rounding out Ester's other attractions are RV parking, the Pick 'n Poke Gift Shop and the Ester Gold Camp Hotel with clean economical rooms starting at $55.00.
