Campground Desciption and details: The Brazeau Reservoir Recreation Area Campgrounds, a two hour drive southwest of Edmonton, offers an affordable opportunity ($15.00/night/unit $90.00/week/unit - free firewood) to enjoy the beauty of west central Alberta. Located near the town of Drayton Valley in the County of Brazeau, the campgrounds are in four separate areas; the Reservoir Loops (including overflow and two group areas,) the West Canal Campground, the East Canal Group Camp and the Brazeau Group Camp. This variety of areas means campers have a choice of choosing a spot to enjoy their favourite recreation activities, or experience a quiet relaxing rest. The major attraction is fishing for Northern Pike, both on the canal and on the reservoir which are two seperate bodies of water and either from the shore or on a boat. As an added bonus, there are no size restrictions on the Pike so you can keep whatever you catch (limit of three fish per person.) With a bit more effort there are trout species to catch on the Elk and Brazeau rivers as well as Brown Trout below the Powerhouse. Two stocked trout ponds along the Dyke road can also be rewarding for those wishing to fly fish. Everyone fishing should consider entering the annual Lodgepole Fishing Derby. Another popular activity is all-terrain vehicle recreation. The area's old roads, pipeline and seismic right-of-ways offer a chance to explore the surrounding country. In the spring the exposed beach of the low reservoir is a sandy playground for atv users. The reservoir, the larger body of water, is untapped for all kinds of water sports, especially water-skiing. The canal has too many underwater hazards for anything but cautious boating for fishing. Both areas are exciting opportunities for canoes and kayaks. Hiking the west canal interpretive trail can inform and educate all ages, while the viewpoint trail gives an awe inspiring view of a setting sun in the western sky. Watching for the huge birds of prey; the Osprey and Bald Eagles, is also popular. Obtaining the Brazeau Resources Tour Booklet can give campers a better appreciation of the total value of both recreation and economic development in the reservoir area. Camp Brazeau operates the campground with the goal of attracting families and campers wanting to experience the wilderness- campers wishing to "party" will have to rent the group sites or find some other place to make their noise. There will be zero tolerance of anyone not respecting other campers. The Brazeau Reservoir Recreation Area Campgrounds is a quiet wilderness campground. Reservations are recommended for the long weekends otherwise reservations are not needed to find a campsite during other weekends unless campers want a specific site. Reservations with less than one week notice are charged an extra fee. And remember----- there is no lake! its the reservoir, or its the canal!
